the heart of centrepoint

The English word “core” comes from the same root as the French word for heart – coeur.  To understand what we’re about as a church, you need to look at our heart – our core.  Jesus had two core statements – these are known as the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

The Great Commandment: Mark 12:28-31

And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus answered, "The most important is 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'  The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

The Great Commission:  Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Jesus’ core teaching can be summed up like this:

Love God and the people around you, and tell everybody you can about me.”

As a church, we want to do a good job with the core stuff.  The Great Commandment means that God has called us to be an authentic community based on the Love of God.  It is our calling to know the love of God and to love others. The Great Commission means that we are a community with a purpose – a community on mission.

Everything we are as a church comes from Jesus’ Command and His Mission.  From the Mission of Jesus, we derive our Mission Statement.  From the Command of Jesus, we derive our Vision. We often say at CentrePoint Church “people matter to God.”  We humbly recognize that we are amongst the “lost” Jesus came to seek and to save.  But so many still wander, untouched by His love.  This section represents our collective beliefs on who we want to be how we want to live and minister so that we can do that very thing – all to the glory of God.
